Today’s piano practice was derailed when I messed up an exercise in a way that reminded me of a little classic of the early 90s.
I was working on opposing B-major scales when I fat fingered a few notes in a way that reminded me of the keyboard intro to Beautiful Girl by INXS. I hadn’t heard or thought of the song in years.
“Hey, that’s a simple piece of music, I’m going to take a few minutes and figure it out.”
There is a sparse and floaty “F# B D# B F#, G# B E B G#” guitar part under this to keep the tune moving, but this is the full keyboard part. There is nothing complex about this song. The lyrics are ambiguous but ambiguously relatable.
She’s so scared
So very frightened
Anything could happen
Right here tonight
Beautiful girl. Stay with me.
“Stay with me” are strong words when you string them together. They always mean more than they say.
